The Golden State Valkyries are all about building a culture and identity that can last in the Bay Area for years — or even generations. Part of that identity will be shaped on the court, but part of it will also be shaped off the court, and that's where the team's new partnership with founding partner Rakuten comes into play.
Tunnel fits are a major part of the pregame fun for fans and athletes alike, and a lot of people flock to social media ahead of a game to see what their favorite player is wearing into the night's game. The Valkyries and Rakuten have found a way to capitalize on that interest and fan engagement — and a way to bring even more tunnel fit action directly to fans.
Rakuten has been named the official shopping partner of the team and their fans, and this year will offer exclusive merchandise and Cash Back opportunities throughout the season. Golden State Valkyries President Jess Smith announced the news Wednesday morning, just hours after the team played their first-ever preseason game.
The Valkyries are all about personality
Golden State has a roster full of incredible athletes from all over the world, and plenty of fans who want to see who their favorite players are on and off the court. "Our fans, community, and players bring style, dedication, and personality to everything they do—and now Rakuten will help the Valkyries showcase and celebrate these moments," Smith explained. "Through ‘Rakuten Arrivals,’ fans will gain unique opportunities to connect with players' personal expressions through their game day fashion as they arrive at Chase Center. We're thrilled to welcome Rakuten as a partner to the Valkyries, enhancing how our community experiences during our inaugural season."
Last night's game offered fans a taste of things to come. Tiffany Hayes more than met the moment, showing off her distinctive style. Hayes is widely celebrated for her ability to put an outfit together, making her an ideal athlete for exactly this kind of partnership.
The Golden State Valkyries have a strong future ahead of them
Though the Valkyries lost to the Los Angeles Sparks Tuesday night, the team performed much better than many expected — and they showed that they have the staying power to make this WNBA season a wild ride. The game also offered a look into areas in which the Valkyries have room to grow. There has been an oft-stated emphasis on hitting 3s from the team's coaching staff throughout the offseason and preseason, but it took a full 14 attempts before Monique Billings finally hit the first three-pointer for the team.
The Golden State Valkyries also need to communicate more frequently and clearly to one another on the court. Some of that will simply come with time — the team is new and the athletes are learning one another and a new system — and communication is something the team can begin to improve as soon as their next practice.
Of course, one thing is for sure: the Valkyries are definitely winning when it comes to rocking the tunnel — and we can't wait to see what each player has in store for fans next.
