If you're reading this, it's unlikely you need a reminder but here is one anyway: the WNBA expansion draft is this Friday, Dec. 6, which means we'll soon have a much clearer understanding of who is on the roster for the Golden State Valkyries.
The Expansion Draft is an exciting (and stressful) time for everyone involved, including athletes, coaches, team owners, GMs, and fans, but it's also a great sign that the WNBA is growing in the right direction. More teams means more opportunities and more professional women's basketball — which is only a good thing.
There is a lot of excitement building as we head into the Expansion Draft Friday. Here is what you need to know about watching the draft live.
When is the 2024 WNBA Expansion Draft?
The Expansion Draft will take place on Friday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m.
How does the 2024 WNBA Expansion Draft work?
Each of the WNBA's 12 teams has submitted a list of six protected players who cannot be drafted by the Valkyries. Those lists have been kept private, but there are plenty of guesses out there as to who each team is and is not protecting (including our own). The Valkyries can select one unprotected player from each team.
It's important to note that just because the Valkyries can select one player from each team it doesn't mean they will. The team could also opt to leave a few roster spots open for trade negotiations at the beginning of next year.
The Valkyries can also make deals with other teams that would result in protections for players outside of a team's list of six in exchange for additional draft picks. If the team opts to draft a player who does not have a contract for the 2025 season, the Valkyries will get the rights that the player's current team holds.
Who are the protected players for the WNBA Expansion Draft?
The lists of protected players will not be made public, but the possibilities are pretty intriguing.

Will there be more Expansion Drafts?
Yes. The WNBA will add two new teams in 2026 in Portland, Oregon, and Toronto. Both teams will hold an Expansion Draft after the 2025 season.
